Eke Kriek

Opening 14 januari 2012, 15 - 19 uur

C3 Gallery proudly announces the second solo show of Eke Kriek. Nature forms the new perspective of Kriek’s exhibition An Investigation, where she focuses mainly on the sea because of its infinite greatness. To get grip on the wide surroundings, she photographs different landscapes in the same way. As a result the horizon is similar in each picture, with the effect that the pictures together form a new landscape. Next to the new theme nature, Kriek uses themes in her work, like uniformity, urban environment and personal memories.

The basis for her work is found in her near surroundings or in archival materials. She searches for similarities, and determines them as uniform. This can result in a search of literal uniforms, but she also focuses on invisible forms of uniformity. For instance blue canvas that can be found everywhere in the streets of Tokyo, and is used for different purposes. This is how Kriek creates different groupings and orders of objects that aren’t obvious, but are there.

In the work of Kriek a fascination gives way for the ordering of images, which can be seen in her use of repetition. She has an empirical manner of working and researching. She does this by observing her subjects and registering them photographically or filmic. When working she is constantly in search of restrained moments.

Subsequently Kriek makes new combinations of her observations, and goes in search of boundaries and extremes concerning the content of the work as well as the final visual work. Her work can be serious and stately, but filled with humor at the same time. The work must be photographical but also filmic: there where the image stands still she searches for possibilities to let it move.

Eke Kriek (1981) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. In 2008, Kriek participated in the international group show Empty Paradise in the Hague Museum of Photography. In 2009 her film 'Tokyo Blue Screen ', filmed during her stay in Tokyo, was chosen for ’10 years The One Minutes’ the Kunsthal in Amersfoort. The first solo exhibition was in May 2010 in C3 Gallery, titled Sumimasen.
